“The disappearance of penance, even more, the disappearance of the spirit of penance, should concern us.

Penance is a condition of salvation for individuals and society. Penance never loses its value or timelessness.”

----Pope John Paul II----

“When you do penance for Lent, you imitate Jesus and you strengthen your will so that when

something evil comes your way, you can say ‘no.’ Give up something that costs you

something; then you will is stronger to say ‘no’ to more important things.”

----Mother Angelica----

Prayer For Forgiveness

To You, O God, Fountain of mercy, I come, a sinner. May you wash away my impurity.

O Sun of Justice, Give sight to the blind, O Eternal Healer, cure the wounded.

O King of Kings, restore the despoiled. O Mediator of God and Man, reconcile the sinful.

O Good Shepherd, lead back the straying.

O God, have pity on the wretched, show leniency to the guilty, bestow life on the dead,

Reform the impious, and give the balm of grace to the hard of heart.

O most merciful God, call back the one who flees, draw back the one who resists,

Lift us the one who falls, support the one who stands and accompany the one who walks.

Do not forget those who forget You. Do not desert those who desert You. Do not despise those who sin against You.

For in sinning, I have offended You, my God. I have harmed my neighbor and have not even spared myself injury.

I have sinned, O my God, against You, almighty Father, because of my weakness;

Against You, all-knowing Son, because of my ignorance;

Against You, merciful Holy Spirit, because of my malice.

Thus have I offended You, most high Trinity.

Woe to me, a pitiful soul. How many, how great, and how diverse are the sins I have committed.

I abandoned You, Lord. I question Your goodness by yielding to evil cravings and weakening myself with harmful fears.

By such things, I preferred to lose You rather than abandon what I desired, to offend You rather than face what ought not to be feared.

O my God, how much harm have I done by word and deed, and by sinning secretly, openly and defiantly.

Therefore, our of my weakness I beg You not pay need to my iniquity, but rather to Your immense goodness.

And I beg You mercifully to pardon what I have done, granting me sorrow for my past actions and precaution in the future. Amen.

The Family

Hidden In The Health Care Bill: is a penalty for those who are married. Although marriage has been shown to stabilize families regarding issues of poverty, domestic violence, child abuse and school dropouts, a couple that marries will be charged a 40% higher premium on their health care than if the same couple did not marry. The government is encouraging couples to remain unmarried by rewarding them with a separate health care standard. When a Wall Street Journal reported questioned the Democratic authors of the bill, it was clear that this differential was deliberate, as the staff member said, “You have to decide what your goals are.”

For Your Information

This Lent: the very first week, invite someone you know who is no longer a practicing Catholic, to come home to the Church. Especially make known to that individual the extraordinary graces of Divine Mercy Sunday, where, anyone going to Confession and receiving Holy Communion at Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday  will be granted complete remission of sins and punishment, which Saint Faustina has stated is an extraordinary grace granted to mankind by Jesus himself for the difficult times in which we live. By inviting this person early during the Lenten season, he will be given the opportunity to take the time afforded him during the six weeks of Lent to consider the idea. Don’t miss this opportunity, for their sakes, as well as the Church.

January 31, 2010: Cardinal Christoph Schonborn. the Archbishop of Vienna, will be speaking in the United States on the campus of Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. He will serve as principal celebrant for the noon Mass at St. Benedict’s Abby Church on the campus, and will follow with a lecture titled, “Pope Benedict, Regensburg, and the Controversy of Creation and Evolution” at 2:30 pm.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta: will be issued a new postage stamp by the United States Postal Service in 2010 for her humanitarian work in serving the poor, sick and destitute people of India. The Nobel Peace Prize winner was so dedicated to her work that she convinced the board to dispense with the dinner for her Peace Prize award and to donate the money to the poor. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan in 1985, and was awarded  honorary citizenship of the United States by then President Bill Clinton in 1996. Heroes Among Us: Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, Zilda Arns, sister to the retired Bishop of San Paulo, Brazil, died in the Port-Au-Prince, Haiti earthquake. The 75 year old Brazilian pediatrician and aid worker was known for the dedication of her life to the International Pastoral de Crianca network she implemented that worldwide had the greatest success at reducing infant mortality rates. She was in Haiti discussing plans about implementing the program in the poor communities there. She was the 12th of 13 children born to German immigrants, was a mother of five children, and was widowed in 1978 when she began the pastoral care of children program at the request of the Brazilian Bishop’s Conference. In Brazil alone, the program has 261,000 volunteers who care for more than 1.8 million children from birth to 6 years of age, 95,000 pregnant women in more than 42,000 communities, and sees to the educational needs of the children and mothers for both nutrition and teaching them to read and write. Representatives from other countries visit Brazil to learn about the methods as a model for programs they want to develop in their homelands.

There Will Be: a $4 million dollar ad during the Super Bowl with the mother of Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tedbow, who led the Florida Gators to win several titles. Doctors had urged Mrs. Tedbow to abort Tim because of a drug it was necessary for her to take in order to save her life that likely would cause serious damage to her pre-born baby. She refused, and had a perfectly healthy child as a result, and wants to tell her story. It is not known exactly how this pro-life message will be presented.

From The Vatican

-ZenitNews-

The Holy Father: has announced major plans for the year 2010, where he intends to visit the countries of Malta, Portugal, Cyprus and the United Kingdom. It is believed that he will publish the second volume of his book, “Jesus of Nazareth,” and that he will very likely beatify Pope John Paul II and also Cardinal John Henry Newmann. The Pontiff also intends to further work towards advances in unity with other religions, particularly Islam and Judaism. He also intends to work in the area of the Middle East.

Nobel Peace Prize Candidate: Argentinean Jew, Barui Tenembaum, founder of the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation, has dedicated his life to discovering those whom he calls, “heroic human beings,” which includes Pope John XXIII. The Foundation pays tribute to the “Saviors of the Holocaust who risked their lives and freedom to save thousands of Jews from certain death in the hands of the Nazis during the Second World War.” Mr. Tenembaum learned of the vast efforts of Angelo Boncali, who later became Pope John XXIII, and said, “Time and time again I cannot but be deeply moved to tears to learn of the feats of this simple and modest great son of the Italian people.” Details of the foundation's research into Roncalli's efforts are available on its Web site at The International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation: http://www.raoulwallenberg.net/

The Vatican Reports: that the government in Malaysia has forbidden the use of the word, “Allah” by any non-Muslim. The country’s religious population is 60% Muslim, and the Catholics there have a lower birth rate, so that they continue to be a minority. Due to the discrimination against them in the universities, most Catholic families send their children abroad to be educated, where they remain for fear of discrimination problems should they return.

Portugal, Fatima: The Vatican reports that the Church of the Holy Trinity and four statues at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima were vandalized. Graffiti with the words, “Islam, moon sun Muslim and mosque” were painted on the Church, as well as the statues of Pope John Paul II, Pope Paul VI, Pope Pius XII and Bishop Jose de Silva were also painted.

The Government

Helen Alvare: a Consultant to the Pontifical Council for the Laity and Senior Fellow of Law for the Culture of Life Foundation, has spoken out against the Obama Administration’s appointment of Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the Department of Education, Kevin Jennings. She pointed out that this appointment of Jennings “Gives the President a way to ensure the influence of homosexual-rights-activist in important places such as our nations’ public schools without the President having to pass a law or even hold a Congressional hearing, both of which would generate public attention and opposition.” Kevin Jennings is noted for his leadership of the Gay-Lesbian and Straight Education Network which he founded in 1990. Miss Alvare states that the Network’s website recommends books for youth which, “Present homosexual sexual encounters as anonymous, degrading, grotesque and sometimes violent and describe graphic sexual encounters involving young children.” Further, “educational” conferences continue today which Mr. Jennings began during his tenure as Executive Director of the Network; with the help of the Massachusetts State Department of Education, the Safe Schools Program and the Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, a “youth only” session instructed students ages 14-21 about homosexual practices, distributed “kits” to hundreds of young people about how to perform certain homosexual acts…one session was titled, “What They Didn’t Tell You About Queer Sex and Sexuality in Health Class.” Miss Alvare warned that being a “Safe School Czar” means “Keeping schools safe from the influence of those opposing the early and degrading sexualization of minor children.” Fifty three Congressmen united and sent a letter to the President asking for the removal of Jennings, stating, “It is clear that Mr. Jennings lacks the appropriate qualifications and ethical standards to serve in this capacity,” but no such removal has occurred. The legislators said, “Mr. Jennings has played an integral role in promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America’s schools, an agenda that runs counter to the values that many parents desire to instill in their children, and that Mr. Jennings has a narrow view, since focusing almost exclusively on promoting homosexuality for more than 20 years is not primary to make a school safe and drug free.” Additionally, in the past Jennings has networked with Planned Parenthood and the Sexualtiy Information and Education Council of the U.S., which are outside the mainstream of adult’s respect for human life and dignity.” She said, “All should demand that the government get out and stay out of the business of instructing children about human sexuality in ways that degrade them specifically as children and also as human beings.” –ZenitNews-

The President: on December 16, 2009, amended Executive Order 12425 which now gives the international policing organization, INTERPOL, full immunity to operate in the United States. In other words, INTERPOL will operate on American soil beyond the reach of our FBI and is immune from the Freedom of Information Act requests. This becomes a global law enforcement entity with full law-enforcement authority without any check on its power by the laws of the United States or any of its agencies. This absolves Section 2c of the United States International Organizations Immunities Act, so that, property and assets of international organizations, wherever located and by whomsoever held, shall no longer be immune from search or from confiscation. Therefore, INTERPOL could arrest American citizens on our own soil without oversight from our own law enforcement agencies, and the arrested American would have no legal authority to demand full documentation from INTERPOL regarding the charges brought against them. See: www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/executive-order-amending-executive-order-12425

Another Tax: is in the works, this time from the United Nations which intends to tax US citizens through their World Health Organization, which intends to impose a global consumer tax on internet activity and everyday financial transactions such as paying bills online. These funds would then be used to transfer drug-making research, development and manufacturing capabilities, among other things, to the developing world, thereby, “spreading the wealth around.” The “indirect consumer tax” is only one of a suite of proposals to finance the global medical industry, which will shift research and development to other countries. An emerging program known as UNITAID begun in 2006, hosted by WHO, is being partly financed by a fee on airline tickets in France, Brazil, Chile, Norway and Britain in order to create a global health-care tax system. SpiritDaily-

Obama’s Faith Council: is finalizing a draft report, with one of the key debates being whether there should be rules requiring religious groups to cover up religious symbols if the group receives federal funding. For example, if a church receives money for a soup kitchen, it would have to remove or cover all crosses, pictures and the like, every time they serve food to the hungry.

An Extraordinary Account: was published by The Wanderer newspaper regarding the use of bombs containing depleted uranium (DU), napalm and white phosphorus that were dropped on Iraqi cities during a 2004 bombing, particularly of Fallujah. The lingering effects are seen with the babies, which are terribly deformed, some with two heads, a single eye in the middle of their foreheads, missing limbs to such a degree that 75% of the babies were born deformed and 24% died within one week. Further problems exist with extraordinarily high rates of leukemia and cancers being reported. These problems are also affecting our own Gulf War 1 veterans, 50% of whom filed claims for various forms of cancer, and also have had children with chromosomal birth defects that are twice the number of the general population, including brain tumors, heart defects, kidney defects, Goldenhar’s syndrome where only half the face of the child develops, high rates of leukemia soon after birth, and a stillborn rate three times the average. (currently the Veteran’s Administration is not reporting cases to the registries) In Iraq, the Minister of Women’s Affairs has written to the United Nations requesting an investigation of the weapons used by the United States and Britain on their country. This is a terrible scandal and crime against humanity, both the Iraqis and our troops.

Anyone: who would like to be informed regarding bills before the U.S. Senate and House can go to www.marpx.com  to view what is in the bills, and to track its progress.

In The Know About Our Times

In Rome: two hundred Bishops from Africa met and released a document in which they discussed the humanitarian aid being performed on the African continent by various groups, including the United Nations. The Bishops were appreciative of the work done to combat poverty and diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and Aids. However, they were sharply critical of those groups they perceived were undermining the African values of family and human life, and went so far as to call these people, “Wolves in sheep’s clothing.” Evidently an international binding treaty titled, “The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa” (also known as “The Maputo Protocol” signed in 2003 in the Capital city of Mozambique) was foisted on the peoples of the Assembly of the African Union. Fifteen member nations of Africa’s fifty-three countries signed the document. The treaty changes family values, under the guise of helping women attain their rights. The Catholics see-through this, and are identifying it as population control, followed by lowering population numbers, via abortion-on-demand. It also blurs the uniqueness of the different roles of men and women. These bold Bishops also spoke out against “multinationals” that encourage the perpetration of crimes against humanity, such as genocide, ethnic cleansing, and murdering the general populations of countries, wars which these foreigners are encouraging to greedily make fast financial gain with no organized government to account to for their exploitation of Africa’s natural resources.

The Vatican Reports: that nearly twice the number of missionaries in Central and South America were murdered in 2009 than the year before, with Brazil and Columbia leading the statistics, followed by Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and a nun killed in New Mexico. These are terrible stories of beatings, torture and the like, largely perpetrated by youth. Please remember missionaries in your prayers, those people who work to spread the Gospel and may end up laying down their lives.

National Geographic: reports that the earth’s magnetic pole (not the geographical pole) is moving towards Russia at a rate of about 37 miles per year. Since it is the core of the earth, made of solid iron and surrounded by rapidly spinning molten rock that serves as a “dynamo” running the system, it is believed the surface changes seen are a resulting in the change in magnetism at the top of the planet. It is believed that the planet has shifted poles before, and of course, could again.

The Italian Constitutional Court: rendered a decision recently that confirmed the importance of a National Constitution even though their nation and other European nations were signed on to the Lisbon Treaty. The quote is: “Where rulings by the European Court of Human Rights conflict with provisions of the Italian Constitution, such rulings lack legitimacy.” This is a health indication that the fight for the sovereignty of individual nations is also going on in Europe.

Iraq, Kirkuk: In another outbreak of violence against Iraqi Catholics, where a bomb exploded in the marketplace injuring many people, a Church was attacked 30 miles north of Mosul, in another incident three Christians were murdered, and a Christian student was kidnapped form her university. Many who have been holding out by staying in Iraq, are now ready to either move to the northern part of the country where the Kurds are for safety sake, but the area offers no employment or services. Most will leave the country for good, in an already dwindling population of Christians there. It is believed that turning up the pressure may be a political move to postpone elections or to influence their outcome.

January 25, 2010: “Dear Children, May this time be a time of personal prayer for you, so that the seed of faith may grow in your hearts; and may it grow into a joyful witness to others. I am with you and I desire to inspire you all: grow and rejoice in the Lord Who has created you. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

February 2, 2010: Monthly Message to Mirjana: "Dear children, with motherly love, today I call you to be a lighthouse to all souls who wander in the darkness of ignorance of God’s love. That you may shine all the brighter and draw all the more souls, do not permit the untruths which come out of your mouth to silence your conscience. Be perfect. I am leading you with my motherly hand – a hand of love. Thank you."

On Their Way To Sainthood

Blessed Sister Mary MacKillop: may become the first Saint from Australia after a woman who prayed to her, was cured from inoperable lung cancer. Mary MacKillop was originally from Scotland and traveled to Australia, founding the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1866 at the young age of 25. The sisters cared for orphans, neglected children, the homeless, the sick and the elderly. She brought education and religious instruction to many poor youngsters in the “bush,” was often sick, and also was short of money. She died in 1909 with her congregation of 1200 mainly in Australia and New Zealand, which is made up of 109 houses which teaches 12,400 students in 117 schools. There are also a few other groups scattered around the world.

Pro-Life

LifeNews

A New 40 Days For Life Campaign: will coincide with Lent this year, beginning on February 17th and running through March 28th The Campaign consists of 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, 40 days of constant, peaceful vigil outside abortion centers and Planned Parenthood offices, and 40 days of active pro-life community outreach. Five of these campaigns were conducted previously which resulted in the closing of 5 abortion centers, 27 employees leaving the business, including Abby Johnson, and the saving of 2168 children and their mothers. This year pro-life advocates in 156 cities from coast to coast, 4 Canadian provinces and three Australian states will participate in prayer at local abortion facilities.

A Poll: sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and conducted by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion in December, 2009 found that Americans of all generations are pro-life on abortion. They also found that younger Americans under the age of 44 oppose abortion more than the “baby boomer” generation of those ages 45-64.

Palliative Sedation: Here’s A Slippery Slope. The concept is to aid an imminently dying patient when pain can no longer be controlled by putting the person in an artificial coma, and allowing the illness to run its course. The problem is obvious; some hospices are already considering the term, “death is imminent,” as being as much as a year prior to actual end of life, thus making this a form of slow euthanasia termed, “termination sedation.” Everyone should be informed about this. “Preventative Healthcare Services: is the new euphemism for “abortion” being used in the wording of the Health Care Bill that currently, and thankfully, will likely not be passed by Congress currently. Even though the term “abortion” is not specifically used, this new included term would allow the very pro-abortion Health and Human Services Director, Kathleen Sebelius, to define the term any way she wished, and to apply the term any way she wished.

Alberta, Edmonton: Alberta Health Services have announced that baby Isaiah suffered from oxygen deprivation brain injury at birth, and do not want to continue the use of his ventilator, believing that all medical procedures have been exhausted, and desire to “let nature take its course.” The parents believe they see signs of improvement in the baby and are fighting the hospital to continue with his care. Euthanasia for an infant.

Arizona, Whiteridge: The Living Hope Women’s Center, a life-care clinic serving native Americans, was severely damaged by arson. The center also contained a store to help low-income residents earn items needed for pregnancy, items which were stolen prior to the building being set on fire. VCR’s, televisions and other equipment were also vandalized prior to the setting of the fire. One suspect is in custody and others are being sought.

England, London: Fifteen years ago, thirty-eight year old Russell Turnbull suffered blinding burns to his eye through an ammonia burn, which left him only able to see bright lights, which were very painful to see. Recently doctors at the North East England Stem Cell Institute used amniotic sacs donated by a woman who had a Caesarean section when delivering her child. Through a procedure, the cornea of the eye was repaired, and Turnbull has nearly normal vision. It is truly remarkable.

Haiti, Port Au Prince: In a country that has lost probably 200,000 people due to a terrible earthquake, all Planned Parenthood could think of to do was sent condoms to the devastated area; not food, not water, not medical aid, not help to look for survivors…condoms. Evidently the loss of 200,000 people in a poor culture was not enough of a decrease in population for the leading abortion organization.

Israel, Jerusalem: The Jerusalem Post newspaper published a letter signed by two leading Rabbis in Jerusalem, Yona Metzger and Shlomo Amar, who strongly desire to reduce the estimated 50,000 abortions committed annually in Israel. They went on to cite the Talmud which states, “Each baby that is born brings the Jewish people closed to redemption,” and said that the practice of abortion delays the coming of the Messiah. The Rabbis encouraged Jewish teachers to promote pro-life ethics and to develop closer ties with pro-life organizations.

Maine, North Berwick: Noble High School was denied Title X “family planning funds” in the amount of $18,000 for refusing to distribute “emergency contraception” (the morning-after pill) to students. The issue of offering any kind of “sexual health services” to students was very hotly debated by the Board of Education, and passed only by a 5-4 vote. It is not known if the School Board will have to reassess their earlier ruling. –LifeSiteNews-

Montana, Helena: In January, the Montana Supreme Court issued a ruling that there is nothing in that state’s law to prevent physicians from aiding patients to kill themselves, thereby making Montana the third state in our country to approve euthanasia. Opponents of the measure are already planning to bring the issue to the legislature.

South Dakota, Pierre: For the second time, the South Dakota State Legislature will likely vote on legislation to overturn the state’s ban on taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell research. The State Treasurer, David Volk of Sioux Falls, created a group called, “South Dakotans for Lifesaving Cures,” in order to get the measure on the state ballot, so that taxpayers would be forced to pay for research that involves the destruction of human life.

Sweden, Stockholm: Current laws in Sweden protect women who want to abort perfectly healthy babies because they do not like the gender of the child. This is a right protected during the first 18 weeks of pregnancy. Neighboring Norway and Denmark will not allow abortions after 12 weeks, so women from those countries desiring to abort a child due to its sex, merely cross the border to Sweden where they will be welcomed.

Texas, Houston: Ever since the polls indicated there would be a change to a strong pro-abortion Administration in Washington, DC, Planned Parenthood has been gearing up in anticipation of huge amounts of taxpayer money rolling in to fund their abortion business. They are finishing the largest abortion facility in the United States in Houston, Texas, where a six story, 78,000 square foot building will serve for an abortion facility and offices for the organization. To no one’s surprise, the building is in a low income area, where minority babies are aborted at a much higher rate than those from European descent women.

Washington, DC: A recent poll conducted by the National Association of Evangelicals revealed that, this group of Christians is most concerned with the moral issue of abortion at the top of their list, followed closely by moral relativism and mistreatment of others. The board includes heads of Christian denominations, pastors and representatives of a number of evangelical organizations, including mission groups, colleges and universities, and publishers.

Washington, DC: In the April, 2009 issue of Cancer Epidemiology: Biomarkers and Prevention, a prestigious cancer epidemiology journal, research Jessica Dolle, a cancer researcher. The study confirms the link between abortion and breast cancer, and also confirms an even deadlier risk for use of contraceptives that leads to breast cancer. The researcher stated that these are “known risk factors” in women that lead to significantly higher rates of these cancers. Further, this is the researcher who initially told the National Cancer Institute that there was no such link, which originally became the Institute’s stance, which will now clearly need to reassess their earlier statements. Unfortunately, the study was published nine months age and the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure have made no effort to reduce breast cancer rates by passing this information to the public. Further, if the government continues to fund abortions, they will have a hand in encouraging the deaths of untold women as well as babies.

Washington, DC: Former President George W. Bush will be the recipient of the Cardinal John J. O’Connor Pro-Life Action Award from the Catholic business group, Legatus. The former President has stated, “The most basic duty of government is to protect the life of the innocent,” which he consistently did through his opposition to embryonic stem-cell research, the appointment of two pro-life Supreme Court Justices, an executive order barring federal funds use in abortion-related projects abroad, and protecting federally funded health employees from taking part in abortion or practices that conflict with their faith.

Washington, DC: The Girl Scouts of America’s organization surveyed 3263 girls and boys from third through twelfth grades and found that only 6% of girls were likely to advise a friend to have an abortion, while 12% of boys would recommend the procedure. Although 71 % claim their religious beliefs are important to them, 33% of the teenagers say they intend to wait until marriage for sexual relations, but this figure is up from 24% in a similar study conducted in 1989. Among teens, girls are less likely than boys to say they would have sex prior to marriage at 18% for girls to 38% for boys.

Washington, DC: A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that a67% of Americans oppose funding abortions with government funds under the government run health care bill pending in Congress. This is just the latest of several recent polls, all of which indicate the vast majority of Americans oppose tax-funded abortions.

Washington, DC: NARAL, (Pro-Choice America) is very seriously considering giving their 2009 Hall of Fame award to late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart of Omaha, Nebraska, who has done all he can to promote the memory and legacy of another late-term abortionist, the late George Tiller of Kansas.
